Colorado rush differs from other members of the Juncus tenuis complex growing locally in that the partitions in the capsule meet in the center in a straight line.  Inflorescences are generally congested, and leaf auricles are short.  Plants can be found in moist habitats at a wide range of elevations, including the conifer zone.
