In contrast to the challenge of finding the three spring-flowering species of Mertensia that occur locally, the summer-flowering northern or tall bluebells can easily be found growing along sunny stream banks and around springs within the Conifer Zone. Plants are usually several feet tall, with numerous light blue flowers in an open inflorescence. Look for them, and other interesting plants that share the same habitat (e.g., Cusick’s corydalis), along the summer trails of Bogus Basin, and where streamlets cross the road that serves as Nordic Highway in the winter.
